For those who prioritize their gaming experience, the Alienware AW420K gaming keyboard is the ideal choice. Its sturdy and modern design includes features like custom RGB lighting and responsive mechanical switches. Its build quality, efficient software, and comfortable wrist rest make the AW420K an exceptional peripheral for any gamer looking for superior performance. This article explores the AW420K’s features and capabilities in greater detail.

To accompany the Alienware Aurora R15, Alienware has released the AW420K gaming keyboard and the AW720M gaming mouse, the former boasting Cherry MX Red switches for a high-quality build and sleek look. Alienware has also provided its famous Command Center software for maximum customization of your keyboard and for easy user navigation. This keyboard is undoubtedly a hot contender for the best gaming keyboard on the market.

The keys boast anti-ghosting, N-key rollover, and industry-standard Cherry MX Red switches with a 100 million actuation life cycle to sustain even the most active typists. The keycaps are made from PBT double-shot, further reinforcing the longevity of the keyboard. Moreover, each key features customizable RGB backlighting through Alienware’s software. The smooth metal top plate simplifies the cleaning and maintenance of the switches.

The red switches used for this keyboard offer a delightful, tactile feel that is less stiff than Cherry Blacks. It does not quite offer the same level of ‘clacky’ or loud feedback, but for those looking for something more tactile yet not overwhelming, these switches should be satisfactory. Though, the keys are a bit thin and could pose an issue for those without piano-like fingers, leading to mistyped keys. I had to adjust, and it did slow down my typing and gaming performance. It would be nice to have the option of switching out the switches through Dell’s store or by customizing it yourself; the benefit of having a mechanical keyboard is having it cater to one’s exact needs.

The Alienware AW420K offers two beautiful color schemes, Dark Side of the Moon and Lunar Light. The Dark Side of the Moon version boasts a striking black design, complete with mesmerizing RGB lights. The Lunar Light, on the other hand, stands out in its bright white shade, making for a memorable visual statement in any gaming setup. It’s certainly a pleasant departure from the usual ‘gamer aesthetic’.

The tenkeyless design of this keyboard provides an optimal balance between a full-sized keyboard and 60/65% of versions that omit arrow keys while preserving the space of a keyboard with a num lock pad. This format offers the advantage of desk space savings to those who have no need for a num lock pad. Additionally, the keyboard weighs less than two pounds, which makes it relatively easy to transport. Nevertheless, it cannot quite measure up to one of the best mini keyboards when it comes to portability.

The Alienware AW420K is a gaming keyboard featuring a USB-C to USB-A cable that prevents lagging, essential for serious and professional gamers. Although it provides added convenience, this wired model may not be as appealing for those seeking portability.

PRICE & AVAILABILITY

  • The cost of the item is $149.99 USD, £145 GBP, or AU$238.70 AUD, all prices including value-added tax.
  • What is the availability status? It is available immediately.
  • Dell’s online store offers products in the US, UK, and Australia.

Despite the higher cost of the Alienware AW420K, it’s more affordable than many other tenkeyless keyboards available. For example, the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL retails at $189.99 / £189.99 / AU$219.99, while the Logitech G915 TKL Lightspeed is priced at $230 / £199 / AU$380. Only the Roccat Vulkan TKL is much cheaper at $129 / £119 / AU$209.

The Alienware AW420K, which shares the same top-notch quality and build that other Dell product, including Alienware’s gaming brand, is renowned for, is available in the US, UK, and Australia for a steep $149.99 (£145 including VAT / AU$238.70). Although its premium price tag may not be suitable for everyone, mechanical keyboard aficionados will appreciate the superior craftsmanship of this product.

The US stands alone in its ability to offer the unique and captivating Dark Side of the Moon and Lunar Light models of a product, with the latter commanding an additional $10. While the UK and Australia are stuck with only the Dark Side of the Moon variant, consumers seeking a more vibrant color than black may find this dissatisfying.

HOW I TESTED THE ALIENWARE AW420K

  • For around fourteen days, I put the keyboard to the test.
  • To determine its overall worth, I assessed its portability, the tactile feedback it provided while typing, and how well it performed while gaming.
  • This keyboard was utilized for both gaming and productive purposes, connected to my PC.

Upon acquiring my Alienware AW420K, I connected it to my PC and set out to test its tactile feedback, strength, and typing ability. I then proceeded to play various games to determine their performance and responsiveness.

Specially crafted for gaming, this wired keyboard boasts common switches and eliminates latency issues which professional and competitive gamers require.

Having had extensive experience with assessing gaming keyboards, mice, and headsets, I’m an expert in gauging how effectively each device meets its advertised objectives.
